Brief Junior Development newsletter from Jean, March 2007

Just a few points and reminders that I need to pass on to you as we are nearing the end of this term’s sessions.

Firstly thanks to the parents who have looked after us so well, either by giving out the skis or by supplying us with drinks on the slope. Please do keep those drinks flowing! If there doesn’t appear to be anyone carrying out a tray of cups during your session, please do not be shy about coming to ask us what we would like. We will welcome you with open arms – it’s thirsty work!

Also on the subject of help, please please do volunteer to help if you see that we are struggling – particularly when we have had a race night. The instructors are often at the top of the slope so are not able to ask directly, but your assistance would be very much appreciated putting the equipment away.

Remember the Race Day on Sunday 18 March – a great day with lots of fun to be had by all. Registration starts at 10am. First run will be at 12 noon. People are able to continue to register throughout the morning and will race in the order of their registration. Entry is free to KSC members and their will be a hog roast to prevent you getting hungry!

We are nearing the start of the Race Season (although I am well aware that some of you have continued to race all winter!)  There are also Freestyle competitions on the calendar.  This week has seen one of our skiers competing in the Brits in Switzerland. I’m not biased but I have to admit that I am quite proud to announce that Emma came first in Half Pipe and Slope Style. Emma normally helps with the Freestyle skiers at the top of the slope, when she is in the country!

The Rossendale Summer Race League starts shortly, which attracts many of our young skiers. If you would like to know more about it, talk to Peter’s mum on the slope, or give her a ring on 01539 824936. All are welcome.

There is a Snow Sport England Freestyle Comp here on 9 June. This is a great day to show off your skills on the kicker and in the moguls. You will need to take out temporary membership of SSE for that day as it is a national comp. If I remember correctly the entry fee is normally £20 but the club pay £10 of that.  If you look on the SSE website you will find the details. It is definitely worth making the effort to attend.

Some of you might want to take your racing further by entering the SSE races. These take place at various slopes throughout England. They certainly involve parental commitment, but they enable the skiers to get on the national ladder. Ask for more details. Again the SSE website will give the calendar of events and the details.

As racing is quite high on the agenda over the next few weeks, I’ll briefly explain some of the terminology that you will hear from the instructors.

Gates – the slalom poles

The course – the way that the poles are set out in order for racers to ski round them

Keeping high on the gates – see drawing

Aiming and timing – aiming for an imaginary marker that is about a metre above each gate and keeping a rhythm.

Late – getting too close to one gate which makes it almost impossible to get round the next one

Straddle – one leg on either side of the slalom pole. You would be disqualified for this in a race.

DSQ – disqualified

DNF – did not finish
